Porthcawl 6 Ystradgynlais 9

The Blues made the journey east to world famous town of Porthcawl. An area that had previously been famous for Donkeys and Elvis impersonators was now boasting a very formidable rugby club who have recently been making the headlines. The current Welsh bowl champions held a two and a half year undefeated record at home, with even leaders Birchgrove failing to pick up a victory at Porthcawl.

The action had begun even before Emyr Addey had lead his team on to the field with a very entertaining and enjoyable under 9s curtain raiser between Porthcawl and Ystradgynlais. We would like to thank Porthcawl for the hospitality and fantastic experience, looking forward to returning the favour next season.

A boggy battle was fought out between the two sides with the game played majorly around the half way line. Ystradgynlais managed to apply so steady pressure and in doing so took an early lead in the first quarter through three Liam Harris penalties. The bearded warrior sporting a scrum cap for the first time had certainly brought his kicking boots, his third effort sailing over from the half way line.

It wasn’t to be the only long distance kick with Porthcawl hitting back with their own impressive three pointer. The score at half time 9 – 3 and lot of sore muddy bodies.

The second half started much as the first with a ding dong slobber knocker of a battle. Both sides tackled bravely with some serious body line hits going in. A half of tough running, not the prettiest of games but one that any supporter appreciates f just for the commitment and bravery.

The only points of the half came from the boot of the Porthcawl fly half which shorted the Blues lead to three points. An intense and pressured final quarter saw strong defence and scrummaging form Ystrad holding out and securing four important points. The boys certainly put a shift in and the Blues faithful, again following in numbers certainly appreciated the display and victory.

Next week Ystradgynlais entertain Taibach in a game that is essentially a ten pointer. Our first home game since November.
